Ashton on Why Mila Is Always Right
Ashton Kutcher's First Serious Interview Ever
I think it's possible... until someone develops feelings. You start the clock and go, "All right, let's see how long we can make this last."
Most people think it's easier for men than it is for women not to let feelings get in the way. Do you?
Well, it's kind of territorial — I think guys wind up after a while not wanting another guy sleeping with the girl they're with. But eventually everyone wants something more. We all have that desire for something special, something committed. We all want to be The One.
Is that how it happened with you and Demi — were you friends first?
No, my relationship was a relationship first. Well, there wasn't anything physical happening for a while, but from the get-go it was more than friendship. It was a deeper connection than that.
Well, let's talk about something that seems to keep you connected, since you're both on it all the time: Twitter! Have you ever tweeted Demi from another room?
Yeah, I've tweeted Demi while I was standing right next to her.
Why do guys do things like that?
For the same reason we send you roses at the office: because sometimes being publicly adored is nice. It feels good. So that's why I might be standing right next to her and tweet, "My wife looks so amazing tonight."
Sounds like you've learned some things about women from being surrounded by them at home. Anything else?
Patience. Yes, I have learned to wait patiently. No, seriously, women have a level of outward compassion that a lot of men don't necessarily have. Guys feel as deeply as women, but they don't share it as much. Learning how to do that more has been a valuable add.
It's funny you say that, because Demi is known for playing tough characters, like inG.I. Jane. Has she toughened you up at all?
No. [Laughs] She's pretty tough, but I have my own little grit. We're both very competitive, so when we play games, we try to be on the same team or it will end up in an argument.
Guys everywhere are wondering what the heck to get their wives for Valentine's Day. What's the last thing you got for Demi?
I bought her a tree, a weeping willow. The sentiment behind it was that if the tree is always weeping, then she will never have to cry again.
