✅Top 10 Best Yoga Mat in 2018-2019
The 9 Best Yoga Mats of 2019, According to Top Yoga Instructors
Manduka eKO LITE
When we asked about the best lightweight yoga mat, yoga teachers kept coming back to one mat in particular: the Manduka eKO LITE. “This is my mat of choice and has been for nearly six years,” says Chen. “It’s supportive with the right amount of give without too much sponginess and great for Vinyasa classes.” While it isn’t super heavy, it has enough weight to keep it in place during your practice. And it only gets better with use.
It’s also lightweight enough (4.5 pounds) that Alicia Hansen, a Cleveland-based yoga teacher, likes to take it on the road. “I’ve put it in my checked luggage for a cross-country trip, unfolded it and it settles back out in no time. It’s also one of the more affordable Manduka options, which my wallet appreciates too.”
Nomad Travel Mat
Best Budget Buy
Here’s the thing: While yoga mats can be pricey, you don’t have to spend a fortune for a quality mat. Stepfanie Romine, a certified yoga teacher and health coach based in Asheville, North Carolina, likes the Nomad Travel Mat from prAna. While it’s technically called a travel mat, it will get you through just about any style of yoga practice. The two-sided textured surface ensures that your hands can grip on securely and cushioned on hard surfaces. Bonus: It’s recyclable!
Lululemon's The Reversible Mat
Best Cushioned Mat
“The best mat in my opinion is the Reversible Mat from Lululemon, formerly called The Mat,” says Jake Ferree, a Los Angeles-based yoga teacher. “It has awesome grip and support, which makes it a great mat for classes you get sweaty in.” It’s 5mm thick, which means it’s pretty comfy. “The top layer absorbs moisture to help you get a grip during sweaty practices while the reverse side's natural rubber offers more cushion,” says Quinn Suplina.
Pro tip: Unroll the mat and keep it outside for a few days before you use it. “It has a bit of a strong smell at first,” says Ferree. And, before stash your mat, make sure to wipe it off and let it dry after each use.
There’s nothing worse than your hands slipping in downward-facing dog. What trainers say are hands down their favorite yoga mat with grip is the Jade Harmony. It's Quinn Suplina’s personal favorite. “It’s made of non-toxic natural rubber and offers just the right amount of cushion for beginners to advanced yogis,” she says. “The mat is very stable and is quite durable.”
But if you have a sweaty practice, this may not be the mat for you as it does absorb sweat and can take longer to dry. Also, the textured surface can be a challenge for some. “It can make transitions like upward Dog to downward Dog a little more challenging than on other mats,” says Quinn Suplina.
Jade Yoga's Voyager Mat
Best for Travel
Yoga mats aren’t exactly the most travel-friendly accessory. But if you travel frequently and plan to keep up with your practice, you want a mat that you can easily take with you. Your best bet: Jade Yoga’s Voyager Mat. It’s only 1.7 pounds and folds into the size of a yoga block. “This mat is incredibly compact, yet durable with a great grip. I fold it to fit into my backpack or suitcase and it never creases,” says Sara Clark, a YogaGlo instructor and mindfulness coach. Plus, Jade Yoga plants a tree for every mat sold.
Another option? , which “folds up like a t-shirt,” according to Sian Gordon, founder of Love Yoga in Los Angeles, and keeps you from slipping around. But if you’re looking for a mat with cushion, these aren’t it. They’re paper-thin but get the job done.

Yoga Design Lab Combo Mat
Best for Hot Yoga
When you practice hot yoga, you need a mat that not only supports your body but can also handle a sweat-drenched practice. Say hello to The Combo Mat from Yoga Design Lab. “It combines the functions of a mat and towel in one to prevent slipping around when you get sweaty,” says LA-based yoga instructor and run coach Theodora Blanchfield. It also gets a thumbs-up for its velvety feel and gorgeous designs. The best part? It’s machine washable.
Best High-End Splurge
Most pros agree that if you’re going to invest in a yoga mat, invest in the Manduka PRO, which has been dubbed the Cadillac of yoga mats. “I’ve had [the Manduka PRO] since 2009 and it’s the only mat I use. I was going through two to three cheap mats a year with my Ashtanga practice so the investment was worth it,” says Romine. It’s super cushioned and easy-to-clean (and quick dry) too. “The closed-cell surface is designed to prevent dirt and sweat from absorbing, which can lead to funky smells over time,” says Quinn Suplina. Plus, Manduka offers a lifetime guarantee.
But this isn’t your lug-around-in-backpack yoga mat. “It’s hefty compared to other mats but it’s incredibly durable. I find the extra weight helps keep it in place during practice,” says Hansen. The mats can be slippery to start and may take a little while to break in, the pros note.
prAna Salute Eco Yoga Mat
Best Eco-Friendly/Sustainable Mat
When deciding between yoga mats, material matters, too. “Many mats are made with PVCs and other toxic materials which create the sticky grip. Yoga involves a lot of deep breathing, so I would prioritize eliminating any mat that produces any potential off-gas,” says Quinn Suplina.
One mat that fits this bill is the Salute E.C.O. yoga mat by prAna. “It’s super eco-friendly, cush enough to pad the knees without being too soft, and has the perfect stickiness right out of the package,” says Amy Ippoliti, a YogaGlo instructor, author, and activist. It’s made from 100 percent Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE), which is UV-resistant and uses non-toxic materials in its production,
Backslash Fit Smart Mat
This self-rolling mat is a game changer in your yoga practice. Its smooth top layer provides great grip for tricky poses and sweaty hot yoga sessions while the thick fabric supports knees and elbows for those with sensitive joints. The best part is this mat also pairs with theWomen's HealthAmazon Alexa app, which walks you through the yoga flow of the day.
